In her grandmother's cabinet sits a blue-and-white bowl used for many years. A fine crack runs along its rim, later mended with gold, glowing softly under the lamp.

Her grandmother said the mended part is the most beautiful. She paints the blue flowers and gold lines of that bowl into ten nails, stroke by stroke — a pale blue, a quiet kind of beauty.
